Abstract

Level of spirituality or religiosity often plays a vital role in the day-to-day lives of its followers, providing a foundation of morals, thoughts, behaviors, and actions. This study investigated the role of spirituality and religion in relation to suicidal ideations. The premise behind this study is that level of spirituality or religiosity may serve as a potential protective factor against suicidal ideations. The primary areas of study revolved around suicidal thoughts, suicidal attempts, church attendance, participation in religious activities, importance of faith, faith seeking behavior, and frequency of prayer. The sample consisted of 5,114 participants from Wave IV from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Results suggested that the level of spirituality or religiosity may act as a safety net, catching those at rick before they engage in suicidal ideations.
