Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of childhood abuse and maltreatment on educational achievement and the role of parental figure support, whether emotional or financial, on the educational achievement of victims of child abuse. It was hypothesized that participants who were victims of childhood abuse would have lower educational achievement than persons who had not experienced childhood abuse. Further, it was predicted that parental support from a mother figure or father figure, whether emotional or financial, would have significant impact on educational achievement. Data was taken from Wave IV of the Add Health public use data set (N = 8,991). Results indicated that having experienced childhood abuse had a negative impact on educational achievement. Financial support and closeness to a father figure was shown to have the most significant positive impact on educational achievement in victims of childhood maltreatment.
