Abstract

Using a nationally representative data of rural adolescent boys and girls in 10th grade through 12th grade, this study explored the mediating effects of self-esteem and delinquency on the educational achievement of rural adolescents. Structural equation modeling analyses reveal that the combination of self-esteem and delinquency completely mediates the influence of family social capital on educational achievement.
The findings provide compelling empirical evidence that positive social interactive processes within the family facilitate the educational achievement of young people by attenuating their involvement in non-normative behaviors and enhancing their development of positive self-worth.
