Ornelas, Beninno G. (2014). Fatherless adolescents and a higher propensity of incarceration.
Abstract
Several factors often limit paternal involvement in children's lives, some of these being economic status, separation, divorce, incarceration, involvement in social services, and negative stigma. This article will discuss the benefits of fathers engaging in the lives of their children. This research project will elucidate how a father's absence promotes a propensity for adolescent incarceration. The sample size for this study uses research data from Add Health and consisted of all eligible Wave IV participants (N=5,114). Findings revealed a significant correlation between the father-adolescent relationship and the susceptibility of incarceration. The findings also lend support for increased father involvement as a factor in the relationship between absentee fathers and adolescent incarceration. These findings add to the literature suggesting that fathers' absence during childhood has negative effects.
