Miller, Brianna N. (2014). Exploration of the parent child relationship and age of sexual debut.
Abstract
This study examines if there is a correlation between the child perceived quality of the parent-child relationship and the child's age of sexual debut. Using ADD Health Wave IV index, this study uses two measures to determine the quality of the parent-child relationship (N=5,114 young adults). The first measure is how close a child feels to their mother and father and the second measure is if the child is satisfied with the way they communicate with the mother and father. While there is a large pool of information regarding the impact of the mother-child relationship on child outcomes, the results of this study determined the father-child relationship to be significant as well. The results showed that the only significant positive correlation was between the father-child relationship quality and the age of sexual debut; the better the relationship with the father, the longer sexual debut was postponed.
