Abstract

Over the past years, the number of children with parental incarceration has increased in the United States. Research suggests that they are a vulnerable group of children. The researcher investigated the influence of parental incarceration (mother and father) and sexual activity among young adult females between the ages of 25-34. Data were from a sample of 2761 females from the public secondary data set Wave IV from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). The researcher summarizes the influences on the risk of young adult females' engaging in sexual activity with multiple sexual partners. Research findings show that separation of a parent due to incarceration increases the risk of unsafe sexual activity. The strong association between parental incarceration and multiple sexual partners underscores the need to educate young people about the effects of partner choice and the risk of early childbearing and STD's.
