Abstract

The purpose of this study was to look at self-esteem as a risk factor to nicotine use in the Asian/Pacific Islander (API) community. Using existing data from the Add Health Wave IV study, an analysis was conducted on 227 API participants examining smoking patterns and measuring self-esteem. In spite of existing literature supporting a correlation between self-esteem and substance abuse, no significant correlation was found with self-esteem and nicotine use in the API community. In fact smokers scored slightly higher, 8.2946 out of 12, than their non-smoking counterparts, 7.9020 out of 12, but the difference was not statistically significant. What this means is that smoking cessation programs should focus on other factors such as acculturation level and gender and should be directed towards relapse prevention and cognitive behavioral practices.
