Espinoza, Benigna (2015). Suicide ideation among sexually abused youth.
Abstract
The focus of this study was to examine whether the presence of childhood sexual abuse (CSA) would increase suicide ideation (SI). Data was obtained from the Add Health Wave IV data set. The sample size was composed of 5,114 young adults between 24-32 years of age, with a mean age of 30 years old. Overall, participants with a history of CSA were found to be at significant risk for SI. A Pearson Correlation coefficient was calculated for the relationship between participants' incidents of sexual abuse and thoughts of suicide. A weak positive correlation was found (r (5023)=.081, p<.001), indicating a significant linear relationship between the two variables. These findings suggest that CSA may be a serious risk factor for suicidal ideations among victims of CSA. Furthermore, preventative action and appropriate knowledge of CSA mental health treatment is necessary. Future studies should include an evaluation for different forms of sexual abuse.
