Abstract

This study examined the relationship between maternal incarceration and the high school graduation status of their children. Data was obtained from 5,114 participants in the Add Health Wave IV data set. Children of incarcerated mothers were not only found to be less likely to graduate high school, but also less likely to have an expectation of achieving a higher educational attainment. A chi-square test of independence was calculated comparing the relationship between those who had a mother in jail and whether or not they graduated from high school; a significant interaction was found (X 2 (1)=88.958, p < .05). Independent-samples t tests comparing the mean score of highest education achieved against whether their mother had been incarcerated found a significant relationship (t (5062)=6.156, p<.001) as did comparing the mean score of highest education ever expected to achieve against whether their mother had been incarcerated (t (3831)=3.468, p<.001). Implications and direction for further research are discussed.
