Bernal, Bannia Bianney (2014). Alcohol abuse among Hispanics versus non-Hispanics.
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore alcohol abuse among Hispanics depending on the degree of acculturation. This study examined the association between alcohol abuse among Hispanics versus non-Hispanics and the levels of acculturation that lead Hispanics to abuse alcohol. Data was obtained from 423 young Hispanic adults participants in the Add Health Wave IV data set. Hispanics were found to be at risk of hurting themselves or others under the influence of alcohol. These findings suggest that the level of acculturation may be a risk factor for alcohol abuse among the Hispanic population. Furthermore, an environmental prevention approach and mental health treatment is necessary. Future studies should investigate alcohol abuse among Hispanics and the development of prevention models that can decrease alcohol consumption among the population.
