Novoa, Cynthia Ileana (2014). Does divorce cause depression?.
Abstract
Divorce is a traumatic experience that can leave a bitter taste with everyone who is involved. This study examined the relationship between divorce and the diagnosis of depression. Data was obtained from 4,885 participants in the Add Health Wave IV data set. The results indicated that divorce was not related to the diagnosis of depression within the participants of the study. Three chi-tests were done where the diagnosis of depression was compared to divorce (X2(1)=124,p>.05), divorce was then compared to widowhood status and annulments and the diagnosis of depression and that too was found to be non-significant (X2(2)=3.961, p>.05. Lastly, divorce status was compared to annulment versus a spouse dying and the diagnosis of depression which was also non-significant (X2(1)=2.107, p>.05.) A limitation for this research was the age of the Wave IV participants. Future research should focus on a group where the participants are older in age.
