Ford, Alvanisha (2014). Does strain play a vital role in adolescents suicide ideation?.
Abstract
In this research Agnew Strain Theory was used to argue why suicide amongst adolescents has increased at an alarming rate. The term "adolescent" is a time of change in which children begin to experience strong feelings of stress, confusion, self-doubt, and pressure to succeed. This research scrutinizes factors such as family stability, age, gender, bullying, mental disorder and substance abuse as avenues to explain different methodologies in which adolescents face strain. Looking at secondary data from Addhealth.org, completed in 1994-1995 and 1996, questions from the data set were utilized to complete a chi square model and a logistic regression. The researcher found that children who do not have a good relationship with their parents, who were jumped, who went to counseling, and who used different type of substances all have thoughts about attempting suicide. This research has corroborated the fact that suicide attempts are caused by strain and has provided insight for parents, educators, and friends on how to recognize signs that potentially suicidal juveniles display and ways to help them seek treatment. Key Words: Suicide, Strain Theory, Mental Disorders, Adolescents.
