Abstract

This research investigates the impact of religiousness on familial and sexual behaviors among African American adults. This has been the focus of many studies, but the pattern of results is not always clear. In addition, there has been insufficient attention to this relationship for African American and other minorities. Further study is needed to uncover how and under what conditions, religiosity becomes a significant factor either in a positive or negative direction for African American adults. The data for this study come from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). This paper uses data collected from 2016 to 2019. We find that religious behaviors in adulthood do have some impact on familial and sexual behaviors among African American adults, however the results are not always similar across measures of religiousness.
