Abstract

Efforts to understand the etiology of intimate partner violence perpetration are critical given the scope of serious physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences identified by various lines of research. However, despite increased scholarly and policy attention to intimate partner violence, much remains unknown about the genetic factors that contribute to partner abuse throughout the life course. Notably, scholars suggest that blood glucose is related to a broad range of aggressive and criminal behaviors; thus, is likely related to intimate partner abuse as well. Drawing on data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, we examine glucose as a possible mediator in the consistently observed relationships among levels of self-control, negative emotionality, child abuse and intimate partner violence in adulthood. We conclude by discussing the results of this study and the implications for theory, research, and policy.
