Sevilla, Elvis G. (2016). Examining intelligence and impulsivity in relation to violence and delinquency.
Abstract
Youth violence and delinquency are serious issues for all communities especially in the context of educational excellence, public security, and social justice. Scholars have developed multiple theories to comprehend personality traits associated with delinquency and have influenced public policy to address youth violence. One theory that associates personality traits such as intelligence and impulsivity with youth violence and delinquency is biosocial criminology. Drawing from biosocial criminology, this study utilizes National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) data to examine whether intelligence and impulsivity are related to violent and delinquent behavior. The results suggest that intelligence and impulsivity are related to violence and delinquency. Limitations and future implications shall be discussed.
