Abstract
One way to understand observed socioeconomic attainment and criminal behavior is to examine early-life events and conditions. Existing literature indicates that sanctioning by the criminal justice system disproportionately affects disadvantaged people and has numerous adverse effects. It is thus possible that, in ways similar to educational and occupational attainment, sanctioning by the criminal justice system reinforces existing patterns of social stratification. Each chapter presents results from analyses of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. My findings indicate that: workers with histories of delinquent behavior are more likely to be unemployed than otherwise similar workers, but delinquency does not differentiate workers in their earnings and job type; school suspension and expulsion are associated with an increased likelihood of subsequent criminal justice sanctioning, which in turn predicts continued engagement in crime; and criminal justice sanctioning contributes to intergenerational social reproduction by mediating the relationship between childhood disadvantage and material hardship. My findings suggest that sanctioning by the criminal justice system, as well as human capital attainment, can help to explain patterns of social inequality.
